A Prelude to Versailles: World War I Adventure (3.5 Stars)

My second Goodreads Giveaway win was A Prelude to Versailles by Mark Anthony Sullivan. This book came out on July 1st, so you can purchase it yourself. While I have read a lot of World War II novels, I’m not sure if I’ve ever read a World War I novel before, so this was a bit of a different experience. Unfortunately for me, it didn’t meet my expectations. Here are my overall thoughts on it:

The Plot

The book sounded really exciting, and a lot is going on. Yet, the plot did seem a bit slow at times. It seems weird to say that because people are being shot at and framed for crimes. I guess the main thing is that I never fully felt like any of the main characters’ lives were in danger even though I’m pretty sure that I was supposed to feel like their lives were in danger.

This story was set during the Paris Peace Conference at the end of World War I. While there are references to the peace conference, the plot takes place outside of the actual meetings. For the most part, the story could have taken place in a number of different settings without the main plot being affected almost at all.

Any Offensive Material?

There were probably about 10 swear words in the book, so a few but not anywhere near the amount that you find in some books. There is one character (a main character) who is a former prostitute. This is mentioned, but we don’t get the graphic details of her work. Some characters are sleeping together, but there are no sex scenes. The sexual content is PG at the most. The violence is to the level that you know what’s happened, but you don’t get the gory details.

Overall, it was a decent book. It just really wasn’t what I was expecting. It’s not a book that I would necessarily recommend, but it’s also not a book that I would tell people not to read if it was something they were interested in.
