Last week, I finished reading The Wife You Know by Chad Zunker. The basic plot is that Ashley saves several children from a daycare center fire. The whole brave rescue is caught on video and shared across social media. When Ashley finds out, she freaks out and disappears with her young daughter that night. Her husband, Luke, is worried. They’ve only been married a short time, and while she’s always been a bit apprehensive about sharing many details about her past, he soon realizes her secrets go deeper than he ever imagined.
Things You Should Know
One of the first things you should know is that Ashley is a good person. Her secrets do not involve things that she’s done wrong. She’s mainly trying to protect herself and especially her daughter.
This is one of those books where once I was done reading it, I didn’t know if I loved or hated the ending. I don’t want to ruin the book at all, but I’ll just say that it was a bit abrupt, and it wasn’t exactly the ending I expected. A less abrupt ending would have been nice, but overall I think I like the ending. Mostly, I think adding in one more chapter just before the last chapter would have helped to make it feel less abrupt.
I Kept Reading
I really enjoyed this story. It was one of those books where you want to keep reading. I read it in less than a day. As I headed to bed, I thought I’d just read a little bit more. A little bit more led to even more. Before long, my Kindle showed that I only had about half an hour left in the book. Why leave half an hour reading for another day? I ended up finishing the book, and it was worth the loss of half an hour of sleep.
Slowly Revealing Her Secrets
This book had some interesting twists. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. You know the wife is hiding something, but I wasn’t completely sure what she was hiding. She seems like a super nice person who would sacrifice for her family, so I figured she must be hiding from someone. I like how that part of the story was slowly revealed.
Reader Warnings
There was some swearing in this book. It wasn’t super common, but it’s there. The sexual content is very minimal. It does mention that one character caught someone else raping some girls, but we don’t get the graphic details of the rape. The violence is on the mild side.
Mystery or Love Story?
One thing I really loved about this book was that while it is a mystery, it’s also the story of a man’s love for his wife and what he would sacrifice for her. Ultimately, Luke and Ashley really are both great people who will sacrifice for those they love. I would definitely recommend this book.
