This summer, I entered three very short writing contests. Unfortunately, I didn’t win any of them. Here’s a look at each contest entry.
The First Contest
For this contest, I had to write a story of no more than 50 words. It had to include a ticket. I considered several tickets: a parking ticket, a ticket to a concert, a movie ticket, and several other ticket options. I finally settled on this one.
She stared at the lotto ticket on the table, checking the numbers a second time. The ticket seemed to be calling to her, telling her to do something about it. She picked it up and ripped it into tiny pieces. The money wasn’t worth the worry.
Needs to Be 25 Words Or Less
For this one, I had to write a story in 25 words or less. The theme was “Neighborhood.” This is the story that came to mind.
She got off the bus. All the houses looked the same. As the bus pulled away, she looked at the street sign. Oops, wrong stop.
Super Short Contest
The final contest had to be a story in 10 words or less. This story is dedicated to a certain dog who may have decided that electronic devices look and taste delicious.
Wet, cracked screen. The dog looks guilty. New phone time?
My Thoughts on Short Writing Contests
While longer writing contests take more time to complete, these contests with low word limits were hard in their own way. Even when I knew that I had to write something short, I often found myself going over the limit by one or two words. Then I had to figure out what words I could take out or how I could express my thoughts in fewer words. They were fun writing experiences.
