I won it in a Goodreads Giveaway in March, and I finally got around to reading A Limited Run by Karen McQuestion recently. In this book, five characters from a 1990s television show return for a bit of a reunion, playing the same parts they played 25 years ago.
What You Should Know About This Reunion
Twenty-five years ago, A Little Slide of Haven played for two seasons. The show involved the Barlow family, a stereotypical 1940s television family. While it wasn’t a total flop, it wasn’t the most popular television show. It didn’t even make it to reruns after the show’s initial run. The main cast members moved on to careers completely unrelated to Hollywood.
About a year ago, someone leaked episodes of the show online, and now it’s more popular than it was during its initial run. A cast reunion is a must. Billionaire Felix Worthington offers the cast members $2 million each if they will come to Montana where he has rebuilt the town. All original five main cast members must come to the reunion, and all five must stay in character for ten days. There will be cameras, and at the end of the 10-day reunion, each cast member will be paid as long as they stay in character for the full ten days.
Things are not always as they seem. That could be the motto of this reunion.
My Thoughts
It’s hard to fully talk about this book without spoiling parts of the story. I’ll just say that I felt like this was a very well-written book. I was drawn into the story right away, and I wanted to understand how it would turn out in the end. We get to follow each of the main characters and get their thoughts on what’s going on. The story, though, is written entirely in the third person. Because of how well the author lets us in on the characters’ thoughts, it sometimes feels like we are reading a first-person story with different points of view.
My biggest issue is that I felt like a lot of the suspense was missing. I had several key elements of the story figured out within probably the first quarter of the book. The fact that I’m still giving this 4.5 stars speaks to the great writing quality of the book.
Reader Warnings
There are a few swear words thrown in the story. They aren’t super common, but you will find some. There is talk of characters having an affair and a guy who has fathered children with at least two different women, but the sexual content is mild at worst.
Based on the book’s description, I was concerned that this book might turn into a horror story, have some graphic violence, be a “run for your life” sort of story. Fortunately, the violence is also mild as most. There are a few characters who yell at other characters, so maybe some mild verbal violence. There’s also a character who pushes another character down in a violent manner. That’s about as violent as it gets.
If you can get past that it’s pretty easy to figure out some key elements of the story early on, this is a good book. If you figure things out early, just take pleasure in knowing that you know more than our main characters. Overall, I would recommend this book.
