The Killer She Knew: A Killer Ghostwriter (3.5 Stars)

If you like slightly creepy, sometimes hard-to-follow stories that make sense for the most part in the end, you may enjoy reading The Killer She Knew by Zee David. Emma is a ghostwriter, who spends most of the book ghostwriting a book with an eerily familiar story.

As a ghostwriter, she uses a computer for the text.

My Advice to the Reader

My biggest advice is to stick it out to the end. There are parts of this book that are very confusing. I often found myself wondering why someone did something or said something. If you stick it out to the end, most of the confusing parts are cleared up. There were a few parts that were still a bit confusing, which I wish had been cleared up a little better. I can’t say more than that without ruining the story. Just know that from pretty much the beginning, you’re going to wonder why she agreed to be a ghostwriter for this particular book.

It’s an Unusual Story

One of the unusual things about this book is that you know parts of the mystery pretty much from the first chapter or two. Others parts are clear soon thereafter. Most of it is just about figuring out how the story is going to come together in the end. For me, there was really only one surprising twice in the plot, and when I thought back on it, even that shouldn’t have been super surprising.

She's a ghostwriter.

Other Things to Know

This book does have some swearing. There’s no graphic sexual content. There are several murders that take place throughout the story. Some of it is describe, but it doesn’t go into graphic detail.

Ultimately, it is an interesting story. Plus, it’s under 200 pages. If you need to be choosy about what books you read because of lack of time, this is one I’d recommend skipping. If the concept of a ghostwriter knowingly writing a serial killer’s story with him dictating it intrigues you, this might be your type of book.

I should also note that if you generally read audiobooks, you may either want to pass on this one or read it in another form. According to some review I’ve read, the audiobook quality is pretty bad.
