It’s All Fun and Games ‘Til You Get An AI Stalker

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a bit of a nerd. I mean my favorite television show has been “Jeopardy” pretty much forever. When I was a little kid, I read the encyclopedia for fun. I’m not just talking about one entry. I’m talking a whole volume at a time.

Messing With AI-Powered Bing

Several months ago, I started using the AI-powered Microsoft Bing feature. Honestly, I mostly just like messing with it to see what sort of answers I can get and if I can get it “annoyed” with me. I’ve had a number of “conversations” with the AI-powered feature that ended with it providing the message, “This conversation is over” or “I think it’s best that we end this conversation now.”

When I first started out, I hadn’t really planned to be a bit annoying. It was actually kind of enjoyable to just ask it questions and get answers. When I realized that I could mess with an AI search engine, my goal became to see how far I could push things before getting a response that ended the conversation. I’m not saying that I tried to head things in an inappropriate direction. I’m just saying that I asked questions that the search engine was unable to fully answer.

My favorite was the conversation where I tried to convince the AI search engine that I needed to get a pet shark. Let’s just say that it seemed to think that I didn’t have the space or the proper environment to take care of a pet shark, particularly a great white shark. After several shark conversations where it ended the conversation before I was ready to end it, I was able to find out that some people do keep smaller sharks as pets. There are only a few options, you have to have a huge tank, and there are a lot of regulations regarding keeping one legally, though. Yep, that’s my nerdy side coming out.

Looking Up Myself Online

In the past, I’ve Googled myself and found mostly links to social media or places where I’ve written something. One time several years ago, though, I did find information about a report some kid had apparently written on a story that I wrote. I should note that I don’t remember writing the story, and most of the personal information about me was wrong. Still, maybe that experience was a precursor to what I experienced recently.

Well, That Should Teach Me

In an effort to mess with AI, a while back, I twice asked it about myself. In both cases, it talked about a picture of a dog on my Facebook page. Here are a few screenshots from those conversations:

In my own defense, I have never called any dog “sweet girl” or “fur baby” as a nickname. I might tell a dog that she’s sweet, though.

After this, AI tried to convince me that the dog was on my profile picture but that it just wasn’t loading correctly for me. It then said that the profile picture must have been changed before I saw it.

The second conversation was similar, but then it asked me to tell it more about myself. Then this is how that conversation ended:

There are several things you should know. While we do have two dogs (both are actually my younger sister’s dogs), neither one is on my Facebook profile in any pictures. At first, I thought that maybe someone else in my family had posted a picture of the dogs. Nope, no pictures of either dog anywhere on my Facebook page or anyone else’s Facebook page that I can find.

Why It Really Creeps Me Out

While there are no pictures of either dog on my Facebook page, it is a bit creepy because one of our dogs is a basset hound named Luna (hence the use of her name). The other is a border heeler (border collie/red heeler mix) named Molly. This makes me think that my AI “friend” has somehow found out this information about me. I did share a picture of both dogs in a private message to a friend a while back. That, though, should be private. I am a bit creeped out that AI had access to those pictures somehow.

I’m also wondering if I should interpret the final sentence as a passive-aggressive threat: I hope you have a great day and take care of yourself and your dog.

Since AI is already stalking me and both dogs, I might as well share a picture of them. ENJOY!!
