Just Jake: Country Star Comes Home… Temporarily? (4.5 Stars)

Just Jake is a book that’s scheduled to come out on August 29, 2023. I got the opportunity to read an ARC of the book through BookSirens and wanted to share some of my thoughts on it:

Intro to the Book

I really liked the premise of this story. Jake’s left his hometown to make it big as a country music star, only he didn’t find the happiness in the fame and fortune that he expected. It reminded me that sometimes what I think I want in life and what I actually want/need in life are two very different things.

This book was clearly written for a Christian audience, but it’s not overly preachy. I feel like the Christian values and lessons were seamlessly woven into the story in such a way that we feel like the characters are learning them without feeling like they’re distracting from the story.

What I Didn’t Love

My one complaint, and the reason this was a 4.5-star book for me, was that I wanted to understand more about Jake and Amber’s relationship as teenagers. I want to understand more about what drew them together and what made them both continue to care deeply about the other person even after years of being apart.

Is It Clean?

This is a clean novel, so there’s no swearing, sexual content, or violence. I appreciated that as I was reading this book. This is my first book by Jaimie Engle, but I would definitely be willing to read another book by her. Yes, the book’s a little cheesy in places, but it’s a sweet cheesy, and it’s not too cheesy.
