More Writing Contest Losers

Both of these writing contest losers are from last year. They are both super short, so reading them shouldn’t take long.

This was one of the contest losers. We have a cave.

Spelunking and a Body

As an introduction, this was for a Halloween writing contest. It had to be a horror story of no more than 100 words.

Now the Story

She’d been warned. Never go spelunking alone. Now, her headlamp was broken. The darkness was nearly overpowering. Were those voices? Sara listened harder.

“Throw him down there.”

Sara gasped, covering her mouth too late.

“Did you hear that?”

The light came on, the flashlight barely missing her.

“It’s just a rat.”

The light went off, and Sara heard a thud close to her. Then silence. Sara crawled forward, bumping into the body. He was still alive.

“To your right,” he whispered.

Sara felt to her right. There was a light breeze, but could she dig their way out in time?

This contest had a bit of an academic feel to it.

Theme: Ambition

This one needed to be less than 25 words and had the theme of “Ambition.”

The Contest Entry

Premed? Chemical engineering? Computer science? Which should she choose? She clicked the box: Art Education. It might not pay well, but it was her passion.
